Titanium Wedding Ring

Will a titanium ring melt during welding?

Hello, my partner is a welder and on friday we are getting married! What i would like to know is if its safe for him to wear his wedding ring whilst at work? As by trade he is a sheet metal fabricator. (welder) Its made of titanium as we thought that would be the best metal to go with. So was this the right choice?

Sgt Sarcastic obviously is not a welder. The risk is the ring or any jewelry accidentally becoming part of the electrical circuit. If it does, then it is subjected to I^2*R heating. Since the I is dictated by whatever is required for the welding job at hand, the only part of the equation you can change is R, resistance. In this case, Ti is not your best choice. Ti is not a very good electrical conductor, i.e., R is high (technically it is resistivity but that is in the details). Gold (the Au-Ag-Cu alloy) used in rings is probably 12 or 16 carat (50% or 75% gold) and will be a better conductor than Ti. Even if the ring was pure silver (Ag is the best electrical conductor of all the elements, under normal circumstances), if the ring became part of the welding circuit, it would heat up enough to burn the snot out of the finger. The safety rules probably say no metal jewelry of any kind and there is good reason for that. A nice plastic ring or anything that does not conduct electricity should be fine (from a welding perspective).

Otherwise, Ti jewelry is pretty cool stuff.
