About how much should I spend on a reasonable wedding ring?
I’ve decided to just buy a cheaper engagement ring because it is only temporary and a nicer wedding ring, I can afford up to 10, 000 dollars but would prefer to get something for less.
Why even spend that much? Crazy amount imho. Especially considering if it is a diamond you lose like half its value the minute you buy it, kind of like when you drive a car off the lot.
One way to save a few bucks and get a better value would be to get an SI2 clarity diamond, you will not see any difference between it and a better clarity grade with the naked eye. Color, your choice. Most important part is to make sure your diamond comes with a report from the GIA, AIGS, maybe EGL if you have it double checked as they are not great on clarity and color grades bring accurate anymore. If the diamond report is on a little laminated card and has a retail or appraisal value on it, run do not walk away from it, basically a scam! Lots of these gem labs are fly by night and fake values and grades for the stores as well as lie about treatments! Which is another important factor, many diamonds are laser drilled to remove inclusions and then the holes filled with epoxies or resins, which is ok if disclosed and price is considerably cheaper and you don’t mind treatments.
Remember white diamonds are pretty much price controlled, so if a diamond of a specific grade and color and weight is a large price difference between two places, then there is a catch involved like false grading and or treatments! Another option is what is in style currently, and what used to be the norm, a colored gemstone as your main stone. Colored gemstones are far more rare then a diamond, which is actually common, and typically hold their values much better and actually typically increase over time. But same goes with treatments and such. Definitely stay away from TV shopping networks and ebay as most everything is falsely represented, fakes, heavily treated, poor cuts, and synthetic junk. Any deal that is way cheaper and too good to be true, almost always is in the gemstone and jewelry industry as everyone for the most part, pays the similar prices, and poor cutting and heavy treatments are what makes some super cheap! This is same with diamonds. But with colored gemstones, you typically will get thee best pricing from those who buy mine direct rough and cut the stones themselves. In this way they also know the full history of the stones.
Whenever spending anything over a few hundred dollars, require an independent Gemological lab report on the gemstones so you know what you are actually getting, because even some smaller chains and even mom and pop stores can and are selling junk as well!
