Are you supposed to buy engagement presents for people, or cards?

I’m not really sure, my brother just got engaged. I am going to meet them tonight for dinner, I will say congratulations, but should I also give them a card and/or a gift? If so, what should I get them? They already live together, so I don’t think a blender would work.

I didnt get squat when I got engaged. I say between shower gifts and wedding gifts, screw the engagement gift! A card or a hug and kind word will suffice.
