Engagement Ring Design Opinions?

When my fiance proposed to me, he gave me a emerald cut diamond engagement ring. the setting had one yellow diamond in the middle and white emerald-cut diamonds on the side with a few on the baguette. All I can say is that it simply WOWed me but I would’ve said yes either way when he popped the question ^_^
Anyways, I think it’s GORGEOUS and suits me really well but I come from a “traditionalist” family and for some reason my mother and aunts keep on persisting that the design isn’t as beautiful as the common/popular marquise or princess cut settings. So what do you guys think? Is my family right? I tend to sway towards the more unconventional but am I just not seeing things the way other people are seeing them?
